Friday’s Faux Paw


What I wish to discuss today is wearing running/athletic shoes in public. Yes I know they are comfortable, but unless you’re at a gym or out for a run or walk this really looks like you’ve given up on yourself. Quite often a whole outfit is built from your shoes. So if you start out with runners, then you’ll grab jeans and a T-shirt. Now you’re wearing a whole outfit of boring. Why not try a cool pair of Converse street shoes or a chic pair of ballet flats? You could also wear oxfords, loafers, or ankle boots. If you find yourself constantly reaching for your runners – put them in your gym bag where they belong and you won’t be tempted to wear them in public.

  1. I’d love to say I agree, but the sad reality for those of us who teach, have plantar fasciitis, or a history of Achilles issues; runners or a really ugly option like Birkenstoxks are lifesavers. A day in ballet flats equals a night on painkillers, and 8 hours of ankle boots equals that plus an ankle brace the next day. I wish comfort and fashion would collide because sometimes I say screw it and go with the pretty shoes (and cry quietly later).

    • I too have foot issues. What I’ve found works is Naturalizer, Clarke’s or Rockford to name a few. There are definitely other options out there other than sneakers, ballet flats, or Biirkenstocks. The article does mention other types of shoes such as oxfords, etc. Good quality shoes can be just as comfortable as running shoes.
